Finishing

Finishing

The Finish Is the First Thing Anyone Notices

Perfect joinery and precise machining do not mean much to the person walking into a lobby for the first time. What they see is the finish, the color, the sheen, whether the grain reads as intentional or looks patched together from mismatched panels. A finish that is rushed, applied inconsistently, or does not match the sample the architect approved undoes everything that happened correctly earlier in the shop.

CBBE has run an in-house finishing department since 1985 out of our Canton, Georgia facility, because finishing is not a step we were willing to leave to a subcontractor or treat as an afterthought. It is the last thing that happens before a piece ships, and it is the first thing a client actually sees.

What Happens Before a Piece Ever Gets Sprayed

Every piece arrives at finishing already sanded and prepped by our cabinet line assembly team, but our finishers inspect it again before anything goes near a spray booth. Stains are matched against approved samples and finish schedules, not eyeballed against memory of what a color looked like on the last job. For larger projects, we pull and approve a physical sample before committing an entire production run to a stain formula, because catching a color mismatch on one sample board is a lot cheaper than catching it on forty finished pieces.

Matching a Finish Across an Entire Project

A multi-branch bank rollout or a large healthcare campus might have pieces coming through our finishing department across several months, and every one of them has to match the pieces built earlier in the project. That takes controlled spray booth conditions, documented stain formulas, and batch tracking so a piece built in month six looks identical to one built in month one. Finish consistency across a long project is one of the areas where shops without a dedicated, disciplined finishing process fall apart, and it is one of the areas we pay the closest attention to.

Durability for Commercial Environments

A residential-grade finish will not survive what a commercial environment puts it through. We apply catalyzed topcoats built for chemical and scratch resistance where the application calls for it, which matters in healthcare environments where surfaces get disinfected constantly, and in banking environments that see heavy daily foot traffic and handling. The right finish protects the substrate underneath it for the life of the piece, not just for the first year.
